A confiscation in disguise

Dear Compatriots,

In the spirit of unity and solidarity, I greet you wherever you are in our beloved country or anywhere in the world. I wish you and your families good health and success in all your endeavours.

As we draw the curtain down for the year 2023, it's essential to look back and pose the question, what have we achieved as a country in 2023? The entity to answer this question is the so-called Revitalised Transitional Government of National Unity (R-TGoNU), a misnomer of "revitalised" as it remained weaker than a fly's wing for over five years.

Despite the propaganda and cheap rhetoric, peace hasn't prevailed in South Sudan. Even in the capital, Juba, as we speak, the South Sudan People's Defence Force (SSPDF) and the National Security Service (NSS) have attacked the citizens of Gondokoro island for the second time in a week - beating, lotting properties and arresting Chiefs and local youths. They do not want the locals to celebrate the festive season in peace. It conforms with the policy of State Terrorism, which is the only way for President Kiir's government to survive.

Has the R-TGoNU had any success in mending the damaged social fabric? Any layperson who is apolitical will say relations between communities are worse than ever. The conflict is fuelled by the policy of land grab and the resettlement of President Kiir's ethnic group in the ancestral land of communities in greater Equatoria and elsewhere in the country.

Could President Kiir appear on South Sudan TV and deliver a coherent speech outlining the achievements of his government in 2023 in terms of service delivery to the masses? Is it not true that after over a decade in power, Juba citizens drink water straight from the Nile or get it delivered to them by tankers and donkeys? Is it not true that President Kiir could see the river running less than a mile from the Presidential Palace?

Dear Compatriots,

Year in and year out, and it's more of the same. The country is in a state of utter stagnation, well, deliberate regression or attrition, if you will, under the failed regime of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). The country has been hijacked by kleptocrats who care less about the future of the country and the generations to come.

I appeal to our youths not to allow the country to be auctioned to the highest bidder by the current regime. The youths and all able men and women now have the opportunity to bring about change by joining the National Defence Force (NDF), the only genuine revolutionary Movement in South Sudan.

Finally, I wish you all a happy New Year.

Dr Lako Jada Kwajok
Chairman and Commander-in-Chief
National Defence Force (NDF)

Opinion

The Democratic Resistance Movement (DRM) is dismayed by the decision of the regime in Juba to alter the Constitution in a manner that dispossesses communities of their ancestral land. We condemn this decision in its entirety and see it as the final phase in the regime's policy of land grab. The move came in a cabinet meeting chaired by President Kiir on Friday, the 27th of October, 2023. In the context of the revision of the National Land Policy, a clause was entered into the Transitional Constitution stating that land is owned by the people and not by the communities in South Sudan.

The move was triggered by the recent scramble for land in the Nyarkenyi area (Jebel Lado), where land grabbing is underway with the involvement of the President's wife, Mary Ayen.

The unlawful decision would lead to the escalation of the ongoing war as Communities in greater Equatoria, Upper Nile, and Western Bhar El-Ghazal would run the risk of losing their ancestral land, something that never happened during the colonial era.

Furthermore, the move is a hidden attempt to legalise land acquisition by some bogus Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Mongalla area, in Eastern Equatoria (Nimule and Magwi areas) and other parts of South Sudan.

Given the gravity of this unjustified decision that carries far-reaching consequences for the locals wherever they are in South Sudan, the DRM leadership would like to state the following:

Firstly - the communities have owned the land since time immemorial. They were on the ground long before the colonialists and more so before the government of South Sudan. Therefore, the government has no right to decide who owns the land because that decision had been taken centuries ago.

Secondly - Kiir is a de facto President who was never elected to the Presidency. Hence, he lacks the mandate to make a decision that would affect the livelihood of millions of the South Sudanese people.

Thirdly - The National Legislative Assembly (NLA), on its part, is unelected and thus is devoid of mandate from the people.

The DRM and the oppressed people of South Sudan do not recognise this government's decision. For citizens who have lost their land and those about to have their land grabbed due to the recent decision, the DRM tells them not to lose hope and fall into despair. The people will eventually rise, and the tyrant will be held accountable. The land will always belong to the communities.

It's time for the Mundari youths at the time when their villages are being burned, the Bari youths whose ancestral land is being grabbed before their eyes, the Ma'adi and Acholi youths whose communities have been driven out of their homes by the Dinka Bor militia, the Toposa youths in the Kapoeta area where alien forces have encroached on their land, the Murle youths who have been battling the regime for almost a decade, the Anyuak youths whose communities have been devastated by the recent attacks by the SSPDF using helicopter-gunships, the Chollo Youths where history is being rewritten to rob them of their land, and the Azande and Blanda youths whose communities have been reeling from a proxy war imposed upon them by the government – to unite in the face of the existential threat that they are facing. The DRM further calls upon all these youth groups and other like-minded political organisations to join hands in a coalition to remove the regime from power and restore peace, justice, and equality in our beloved homeland.
